Internet Marketing, Keywords and The Domain Name

The domain is my real estate, my store front in the digital marketplace.  It is my brand and I want it to be memorable.

The key to successful marketing, including internet marketing,  is to find what people want and give it to them.

Keyword tools, like Google’s keyword tool, are great for finding a keyword phrase that people enter into search engines.  This tells what people are searching for.  Find what people are searching for and give it to them.

Keyword Domain or Brand Domain

A branded domain name is usually recognizable and/or promoted through Pay Per Click advertising.  Search engine optimized domains are usually promoted with carefully selected keywords and keyword phrases.

Finding and RegisteringThe Domain

So, I needed to find an available domain name based on my keyword phrase.  Domain names are secured, or registered, at a domain registration service.  There are lots of them out there.  I wanted to find one which offers both domain registration and web hosting.  And, I wanted to make sure they  offer WordPress web hosting.  WordPress is a super easy and widely supported web authoring tool  I am going to use WordPress to build my site.  I did some research and narrowed my choice to GoDaddy and Fusesky.

Which Domain Extension To Choose?

One decision I had to make while registering the name is the domain extension.  For an internet marketing business site, .com is the most preferable, followed by .net and .org.  No other extension is worth considering.

How Long To Register The Domain

Another decision I had to make while registering the domain name was the length of time to register the name for.  This means the amount of time that the name is mine alone and no one else can use. it.  Of course I will get a notice before the end of the registration and an offer to renew, but there are different opinions on how registration length affects your ability to rank by Google.  Some people think you need to register the domain for at least 2 years.

Mission Accomplished

After a couple of name searches, I landed on the name internetmarketingsearchengine.org, registered it for a year, set up web hosting, and installed WordPress.  Talk about easy!  The whole process took about 20 minutes!

Domain Registration Video

I found a video from Matt Cutts, who works for the Search Quality group at Google, that says not to worry about registration lengthDomain registrars have a vested interest in telling you to register the domain name for multiple years.  It does not matter tothe search engines.
